Reflections of Reality: Challenges and Hopes in the Villages of Izabal

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the villages of Creek Maya, Santo Tomás, and Lámpara in Puerto Barrios, Izabal. This journey opened our eyes to the realities that many communities face daily, reminding us why our work is so crucial. Although Izabal is known for its lush landscapes and rich culture, the villages we visited present a very different reality, marked by the lack of basic services and the urgent need for development.

The Need for Housing: A Decent Roof is a Right, Not a Privilege

As we walked through these villages, the precariousness of the homes was immediately apparent. The houses, many of them built with cane, straw, and old wooden planks, barely stand and do not offer the safety or comfort that every family deserves. Instead of zinc sheets, families rely on even more fragile materials, exposed to the elements and insecurity. The living conditions are extreme, with homes that do not meet the minimum requirements to protect families. Seeing children play amidst these makeshift structures, we continue to realize the importance of providing a decent roof, a place where they can feel safe and grow with dignity.

Potable Water: An Essential Resource, But Unattainable

During our visit, one of the most pressing challenges we encountered was the lack of access to clean drinking water. In many of these communities, the water that reaches the homes is not suitable for consumption, forcing families to rely on contaminated sources, putting their health at risk. Waterborne diseases are common, and once again, the most vulnerable are the children. This limited access to such a vital resource as clean drinking water underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions that ensure the health and well-being of these communities.

At Constru Casa, we are not only witnesses to these realities but are also committed to being part of the solution. We work tirelessly, together with our allies, to implement programs that transform lives. Through donations and volunteer work, we strive to make the dream of families having a decent home, a place where they can grow safely and comfortably, a reality.

To address the drinking water crisis, we implement Ecofiltro distribution programs, ensuring that every family has access to clean and safe water. Additionally, we promote the installation of efficient stoves, which not only improve the quality of life by reducing the use of firewood but also protect health and the environment.

Your support is crucial. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply sharing our mission, you can help build a more just and equitable Izabal. Together, we can offer a better future to these communities and fulfill the dream of so many families.
